Transitioning from honed steel to composite cylinders

A practical checklist for OEMs and maintenance teams converting an existing steel cylinder to composite.

Start with the operating envelope

Capture the working pressure and test pressure, the temperature range, and the environment (dry, wet, chemical, marine). These set the material system and wall schedule, and most standard pneumatic duties fall comfortably inside composite’s envelope.

Confirm dimensions and fit

Record internal diameter, wall and length, plus how the barrel interfaces with end caps and seals. Composite can be wound to match existing bore and mounting dimensions, so conversions are usually drop-in, but the interfaces should be confirmed on drawing.

Re-use what you can

Because the bore is polished and self-lubricating, seal and piston hardware often carries over directly. The self-lubricating surface also removes honing and re-honing from the maintenance schedule.

Plan the rollout

Convert a representative cylinder first, run it against your normal duty cycle, then scale. Stock can be held to meet JIT, MRP or Kanban requirements once the spec is proven.
